The all-new Audi A8 has been unveiled by the German automaker at its first Audi Summit held in Barcelona. The sedan has been re-engineered with a new design language, an innovative touchscreen operating concept and a systematically “electrified” driving experience according to Audi.

The fourth generation of the A8, which was last refreshed in 2009 is expected to go on sale globally in October this year and is expected to enter Indian markets only in 2018. Audi claims the new A8 luxury sedan is the first series production road car to have been developed expressly for what it describes as a “highly automated driving” experience. The new A8 draws on the evolution of the company’s MLB platform. It offers a new 48V electrical system and a new hybrid drivetrain that offers an electric-only range of up to 31 miles.

The 2018 Audi A8 comes with V6 286 PS 3.0-litre TDi (diesel) and 340 PS TFSi (petrol) engines. Two 4.0-litre V8 engine variants are also available, which churn out 435 PS and 460 PS respectively for the petrol and diesel engines. A range-topping 6.0-litre W12 engine will also be offered by Audi.

In terms of design, the single-piece grille and the use strong defining lines makes the new A8 appear longer than before and like the older A8, even this one too has a standard and long-wheelbase variant. On the front, Audi has added its HD Matrix LED headlamps cluster along with laser lights, while we see OLED lights on the back.

On the inside are where the major changes are visible. Audi has adopted a minimalist cabin approach and shows this with an almost complete lack of buttons inside. The air vents can be electrically controlled through a panel below the huge 10.1-inch infotainment system.

The smooth black surfaces that transform into multifunctional touch screens with realistic haptic feedback when the car is turned on, this also, however, makes it hard to decipher if there was a screen in its place at all when the vehicle is switched off.

The ‘MyAudi’ functionality included in the A8 describes connectivity and how the user will interact with the car, through the advanced infotainment system. Audi AI (artificial intelligence) is the technology for “intelligence and forward thinking”, claimed CEO Rupert Stadler. “AI thinks for you, supports you and creates a new level of independence,” he said. The Audi AI ‘Traffic Jam Pilot’ takes charge of driving in slow-moving traffic at up to 60 km/h (37.3 mph) on freeways and highways where a physical barrier separates the two carriageways. The system can be activated using the AI button on the A8’s centre console. The traffic jam pilot manages starting, accelerating, steering and braking.
