It’s happened at last, Mario’s made it to Android. The feisty plumber made his first mobile debut on 15 December on iOS last year to a mixed response.

Unlike the original Mario, Super Mario Run is an automatic runner with platforming elements and a multiplayer mode of sorts. Given Nintendo’s pedigree and long history of making stunning games, everyone had high expectations of the game’s first mobile debut.

Sadly, the over-simplified gameplay and extremely high asking price turned away a significant audience. Judging by reviews on the App Store, the game has received over 83,000 ratings and the bulk of them have given it one star, the lowest rating possible. Today, the game has a rating of just 2.5 stars (out of a maximum of 5).

The game itself is well made. It’s a polished, simple and fun game and there is a lot of fun to be had. However, the “free” version of the game only offers three levels and you need to pay Rs 620 to unlock the rest. Potentially, you can finish the entire game in just 2 hours. It’s also not a true Mario experience. The one-touch controls are a bit hit-and-miss and worst of all, the classic Super Mario Bros. theme is nowhere to be found!

Regardless, the game is now available on Android on the Google Play Store.
