Twitter has brought in a refreshing new way of social interaction, even with microblogging limited to 140 characters. Today, whether it’s a commoner, celebrity, websites or news channels, one knows how powerful this social tool is to rake up issues, vent anger, express joy, promote stuff and more. Twitter has evolved over the years and mobile apps have become one of the most important resources for Twitter fiends. Mobile Twitter clients not only allow one to use the social site on-the-go, but bring in a lot of features to simplify the usage. If you are an Android user looking for a simple, hassle-free or feature-loaded Twitter client, then here are 10 apps for you to choose from.
Twicca – Free
Twicca is one of the neatest Twitter apps for Android that we have come across. It has a simple and easy-to-use user interface which looks quite sophisticated. This app has almost all features that a Twitter fiend may be looking for. It's interesting that this lightweight app has a slew of features ranging from tweet filtering to geotagging with Map preview to colour labels to mark tweets from all important people. The Google Play page also shows some experimental features of Twicca such as multiple account support, launch from status bar and twitpic video preview. This must-have app can be downloaded for free.
Plume – Free, Rs. 262.93
Plume for Twitter is an eye-candy with a pleasant layout. The navigation gets a little confusing and the panes are designed in such a way that you could accidently click on a link. However, once you get the hang of it, it is very simple to use and you wouldn't complain any further. This is also a column-based app that lets you colourise your timeline/friends from Twitter, manage multiple Twitter accounts, employ scrollable widgets to display twitter timeline on your home and mute Twitter users, word or applications. The only hiccup is Plume shows ads in the Newsfeeds, which can be quite annoying. In case one wants to get rid of such ads, they can only do so by opting for the premium version, which we find a little expensive.
Tweetdeck – Free
Needless to say, this is one of the most popular social media management apps that supports several operating systems and platforms. Tweetdeck for Android is extremely easy to set up and use. The clean interface shows multiple columns for Newsfeed, Replies and so on, and one can also add more columns depending upon their preference. The only hiccup one may find is navigation across the app, which appears to be slightly confusing. Tweetdeck won't disappoint on the additional features front, with list management, interactions section and tweet scheduling to name a few.
HootSuite – Free
Arguably one of the most popular Android apps, HootSuite is a complete package for anyone looking for a convenient way to manage their social media platforms. Hoostsuite is like old wine and among the first Twitter clients that allowed scheduling updates anytime, anywhere. This app is extremely solid and has a cool, dynamic interface. Its column-based layout can be customised and the tabbed interface just adds to the convenience. HootSuite also has its proprietary link shortner.
TweeetCaster – Free, Rs. 271.60
To begin with, theTweetCatser app comes with a bright, lively UI. It is power packed with some really convenient and useful features. Highlights of this app are ‘Search Party’ that narrows down your search while finding a particular topic from among the millions of tweets on Twitter, ‘SmartLists’ that conveniently lists and groups people, ‘Speak Tweets’ that types the tweet just by speaking into the mic and ‘Smartfilters’ that displays only those tweets and photos that you prefer. Another feature worth mentioning is ‘Zip It’, which zips annoying tweeters or Twitter trends from your timeline without unfollowing. To get rid of annoying ads in the free version, one needs to pay a hefty sum.
Attractive and lively
Ubersocial – Free
Ubersocial (formerly known as Twidroyd ) comes across as a feature-loaded application. It has an array of simple, easy to use features and ensures that you have just about everything needed for a smooth Twitter experience. The app features something called ‘Inner Circle’, a feature that ensures you don't miss any tweets from your best pals. In addition, you can also create a Favourite users list and mute hashtags in case you don't want to hear from particular friends/people. Moreover, one can customise the menu, access multiple accounts, connect the app to post tweets on Facebook, employ vivid themes and more. One of the highlight of its long feature-list is ‘LivePreview’ that allows viewing rich media in real-time. So you can check links, videos and images in the main timeline without the need to leave the app.
Seesmic – Free, Rs. 162.74
Seesmic is also one of the popular social media management apps that integrates major social media platforms. Seesmic for Twitter shows a clean user interface without much ado. The simple UI is accompanied by most of the basic features that a twitterati would be looking for. Seesmic for Android lets you take advantage of the Android shortcuts for direct access to your @ Replies from your Twitter accounts. It comes with auto complete to help select the right Twitter user and is infused with complete Twitter search capabilities, geotagging, Retweet natively and with Comments (Old Retweet) and more. Here again, it has a Pro version for those looking for an ad-free experience.
Boid – Free
Boid is nowhere close to the popular and feature-loaded apps mentioned in this list, but its definitely worth a try. It is crafted by a group of 17-year-old amateurs and is in the beta stage. This Twitter client is built around Android 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich and Jellybean). The design is simple and you won't find a plethora of options to choose from, but the app is fast and slick. It can pin columns to the top and comes with some new filters. The app page shows that many features are still to come and we are sure these would make the app a tad better in future.
Official Twitter App – Free
If you want a Twitter app without any fancy features, then head straight to the official Twitter app. Though we wish the interface could be simpler, the app ensures that all the basic features are in place, as you can browse interests, find & follow friends, tweet, retweet, mark favourite, follow, exchange direct messages with your followers, share photos and web pages, real-time search and trends. You can even tweet images and videos, and what we really liked is its ability to sync Twitter contacts with those on your phone.
Simple and neat
TwitVid – Free
If 140 character limits what you need to say, then we are sure you will agree that a picture is worth thousand words. For those who frequently share pictures and videos on Twitter, TwitVid could be a must-have tool in your arsenal. Select the image or video from the Android device, add your message and the app creates a link to the images and videos. Link the app with your Facebook account and you can simultaneously upload images on both social sites.
