The recent floods in Thailand caused innumerable destruction, and now in the aftermath of the floods, prices of hard drives have been soaring. As factories are grounded, prices for drives have risen due to increasing demand. A rather contrast to the news is that of 4TB Hitachi drives being sold in Japan. While most hard drive manufacturers have 3TB drives, a 4TB drive is unheard of X-bit Labs has some details about the drive being sold. The model, the Deskstar 5K4000 belongs to the Deskstar 5K family of drives and is built using parts from Thailand. The drive is SATA3 compatible and is said to run at 5900rpm, which makes it one of the cooler, more power efficient drives around.
The world's largest capacity internal drive
Hitachi is selling the 4TB drive for roughly $345 (close to Rs.18,000), making it extremely expensive. Hitachi recently launched 1TB drives based on a single platter. This improved density means that they’re now able to pile several of them together to create this monstrous 4TB drive. This is a first for internal drives. There’s no official announcement of the drive and when a drive like this might hit other markets. Hard drive manufacturers such as Seagate are skeptical about the prices and improvement of the situation of hard drives through 2012.
