A decade ago, Nvidia was at the top of food chain, offering graphics cards with great performance and a decent price point. There were users who did buy ATI cards, but constant driver issues and lack of proper marketing lead to ATI playing second fiddle to Nvidia

But somewhere down the line, the tides started turning and ATI started catching up. By the time the 4 series rolled around in late 2008, ATI won over a lot of users with the 4850 and 4870 and subsequently the 4890.

This trend continued with the 5 Series of GPUs as well. In April 2010, Nvidia launched the hotly anticipated “Fermi” line of GPUs.
