About.me, the free service that lets you create a personalised, one-page website for yourself, has received an interesting new update. Now users can include their favourite content from Soundcloud, Vimeo, YouTube or blog in their bio box – thereby showing off more of their content that makes them unique. The content can be updated as and when users discover new sounds or content to share.

Adding content from Soundcloud

Soundcloud.com users can embed public tracks, sets or profiles on their about.me page. Users can start off by going to the Edit Page section of their profile under Links option. Here, depending on what content they want to share, they can pick between Soundcloud, Your Blog or YouTube or Vimeo. To include the content from Soundcloud, users can enter the Soundcloud URL or a set or song and hit Add. Those looking to add content from YouTube or Vimeo will have to add the video URL and not the channel URL.

In addition to that, users can tweet their updated page with the hashtag #aboutme, as About.me will be sharing and featuring the ones they spot.

About.me users can beautify their page by setting up an artistic background image and tweak it accordingly. They can have a short bio, too, to give out a little about themselves to their page visitors. About.me also allows you to connect to a bunch of websites to display “the big picture of you.”

A month ago, About.me introduced to its users the ability to connect their page to their Facebook Timeline. With this update, users can share important updates to their page, to their contacts on Facebook. Importantly, users have total control over what is added to their Timeline. Each time a user updates his background, they can show it off to their contacts, or compliment another person's page.

It was last month, when users also got the ability to set their Facebook images as their background on their about.me page. This option can be found on the Background tab. Users will have to connect to Facebook on their page to be able to do this.

The company was acquired by AOL on December 20, 2010 – days after its public launch. This year, however, it got back to being an independent company. A part of the blog post announcing this read, “Today, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be spinning about.me back out, returning to life as an independent company that is financially backed by our management team and a truly amazing group of investors who have backed companies such as WordPress and Google. Our team will remain the same for the most part, and we’ll continue our roles as co-founders.”
