Graphic artists, amateur or professional know one tool when it comes to image editing and that’s Photoshop. The popular software has reached the next major milestone Photoshop CS6 and while the final release is not out, a beta version is available. Users can head over to Adobe’s site and download a copy of the Photoshop CS6 beta for free. The free beta offers users a chance to see what the final software is like. Some of the key features of the new software include Content-aware Patch, which basically offers great control over patching of images than before. There’s also much better performance, all thanks to Adobe’s new Mercury Graphics engine. Many of the effects and tools should now offer close to realtime previews. As with recent versions of Photoshop, CS6 also has an even and modern looking user interface, Adobe claims. Here’s the very popular, Russell Brown, Adobe’s Sr. Creative Director showing off some of the features of the new package.

The current beta will allow users to experience all the features of the more feature-rich Extended version, but when Photoshop CS6 arrives, there will be two releases – one the standard CS6 and the CS6 Extended version. Like with recent versions, Adobe Photoshop CS6 will also utilize the power of graphics solutions to improve performance. Of course, to use all of the features, users will  be required to use operating systems higher than Windows XP for that to work. Photoshop CS6 beta is available for Mac and also for Windows. The Windows installer weighs in at roughly 1.7GB, while the Mac version is no more 984MB.

The complete list of changes and features can be read in this PDF document. Adobe Photoshop has been around, since 1990, when the first release was launched exclusively for the Macintosh. Since then, some 12 major releases have landed on the Mac and Windows platforms. In recent times, variants and simplified versions have branched out from the main package.
