Reliance Jio is the newest telecom player which has been offering 4G VoLTE services from the time of its inception. It recently acquires 100mn subscribers. Despite the bragging rights to being the first company to offer VoLTE services, a recent report by Ookla, the makers of popular Speedtest app rated Airtel as India’s ‘Fastest Mobile Network for 2016’.

But it seems like that claim is debatable after a recent flaw in the Speedtest app was discovered. According to a report by Techpp, Ookla’s Android app has a flaw where the app displays incorrect speed test results on smartphones with dual-SIM slots.

The report details that every time you run the Speedtest app, the app takes into account the network that has been assigned calls regardless of the network that has been assigned for Mobile data. The app does not take in to account the dual SIM settings and assigns the internet Speedtest results to the other network.

Ookla Speedtest Flaw Reliance Jio

This means that if a user has Reliance Jio SIM as the data SIM while the call settings are assigned to Airtel, Speedtest will assign the results to Airtel instead of Jio. We confirmed the bug after using Speedtest app in a number of scenarios.

One important thing to note is that Ookla is one of the leading authorities on the internet to benchmark the internet speeds. The company regularly publishes reports highlighting the internet speeds by different operators. Considering dual SIM phones have been around for a while, this issue should have been resolved by now.

Airtel has reached out to us with a statement added below:

“Airtel has been rated as India’s fastest mobile network by Ookla – the global leader in broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications. This is clearly mentioned in the ad.  Ookla’s findings are based on analysis of millions of internet speed tests logged on ‘modern devices’ by mobile customers across India using its popular Speedtest app. The results include all mobile tests, regardless of connection technology.”
