If a research report put forth by research firm, Ovum is anything to go by then app downloads on the Android market may actually surge ahead of those downloaded from Apple's, this year. According to the findings by Ovum, app downloads off the Android market are poised to touch a whopping 8.1 billion downloads figure, as compared to 6 billion downloads off Apple's app store. The report states that compared to the last year's figures, which were 1.4 billion for app downloads off the Android market, and 2.7 billion off the Apple's app store, the figures this year were nowhere as close.

Surging ahead?

Surging ahead?

Ovum predicts an increase in the app downloads for both the platforms put together, this year would be as much as 144 percent higher than the last year. Analysts from Ovum believe that the need of the consumers to download the best apps around to avail the best services on the go will boost the download rates this year. Revenues gained from premium mobile app downloads are being pegged at $3.7 billion, by the end of this year, and these figures are expected to reach $7.7 billion by 2016.
