The low cost tablet market in India is certainly not wanting for a lack of players! Following announcements from Aakash makers Datawind, Micromax and the homegrown “Daksha attitude”, tablet maker Kobian has announced the iXA tab, priced at just Rs 3,999.

The 314g tab which will be targeted at students, allows web surfing, email access, and support for video, audio and eBooks. Its features include an Android 2.3 Operating System, Wi-fi, a resistive touchscreen and a 1GHz core processor. You also get 512 MB RAM and 4GB internal storage, which is expandable to 32GB through microSD.

Users can also opt to buy an external keyboard for the device.

According to Tech2in, what could hurt the tablet is the OS and the fact that it has a resistive screen. Its report on the tab says, “The UbiSlate 7C which is priced similarly packs in a capacitive screen, so that may be reason enough to go in for that, rather than Kobian’s tablet.

Some people may fuss over the fact that this comes with Gingerbread and not ICS. However, as long as it’s implemented well enough, we don’t see it being a major problem”

The influx of low cost tablets in the Indian market has still not seen a clear winner emerge. The Aakash tablet, which was heavily backed by the government was beset my problems, and there is still not much information on as to how other alternatives have fared. It is also unclear on as to whether users are snapping up the low cost tablets, or are preferring to save some money and buy more well known tablets.
