9to5Mac is reporting that Apple had considered alternative names for the now iconic iPhone such as iPad, Telepod, Mobi and even Tripod. Ok, the last one just sounds absurd.

The report quoted Apple’s former advertising lead Ken Segall, who spoke at an event for the University of Arizona’s Department of Marketing.

According to the report, Telepod was considered as it sounded like a futuristic twist to the word “telephone,” while Mobi was on the list as it is a play on the word “mobile.”

The report also states that the name Tripod had the most impact with Apple’s Marketing team, as it shows a combination phone + iPod + internet communications device.

Remember when Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in 2007, he introduced the iPhone as a sum of three devices: a widescreen iPod with Touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough Internet communications device.
