11.35 pm: Apple iPhone 5S price
$199 for the 16GB model, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB on a 2 year contract. Apple is launching the iPhone 5C in China as well along with US, UK, Canada and other countries. The iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C go on pre-order on 13 September and will be in stores on 20 September.
It will be available in over 100 countries by December. That’s when India should expect the iPhone 5S and 5C too. The price of course won’t be cheap for the iPhone 5S.
11.28 pm: iPhone 5S Fingerprint scanner aka Touch ID
Apple is now revealing its Fingerprint scanner on the iPhone 5S. It’s called Touch ID and is built into the Home Button. It’s 170 microns thin, senses 500 ppi, scans sub-epidermal skin layers.
Pretty neat. This feature definitely makes the iPhone 5S stand out from the crowd.
You can use the Fingerprint scanner to buy apps from iTunes. Yay, freedom from typing ridiculously complicated passwords every time you buy an app. Slightly upset that my iPad doesn’t offer this.
Apple says that fingerprint is encrypted in the A7 chip and never backed up in any Apple server or iCloud.
11.18 pm: iPhone 5S camera
Phil Schiller says that the iPhone 5S camera has a new F2.2 aperture and a five-element Apple-designed lens. Also the sensor size is 15 percent bigger than previous versions.
He’s also talking about bigger pixels and thus better pictures. Didn’t HTC already try to do this with HTC One and its 4 megapixel Ultra-pixel camera?
The camera app has options for white balance, exposure, etc. And yes, the iPhone 5S has a dual-LED flash. One is white, the other is amber. This will help users match the colour scene better when they are taking pictures depending on the light conditions. Apple is promising better skin tones with the LED Flash.
Also the camera has a new burst mode with 10 frames per second. And Slo-Mo which lets users do 120 frames per second. It also has a 28-megapixel panorama. Wow. Based on the pictures that Apple is showing, the iPhone 5S camera looks out of this world.
11.15 pm: iPhone 5S’ new part M7 which is a motion co-processor
Essentially this is constantly measuring data from the accelerometer, compass, and gyroscope. To aid with all those health apps.
There’s also a new Core Motion API which developers can use in their apps. This is will identify user movements.
The iPhone 5S has 10 hours of battery life on 3G.
11.10 pm: Apple iPhone 5S is here
And yes the gold iPhone 5S is there. Phil Schiller’s not so funny joke: “It’s the gold standard in phones.” The iPhone 5S comes in gold, black and white.
The iPhone 5S has an A7 chip which is a 64-bit chip. Apple says this is the world’s first only smartphone with such a CPU. As iOS 7 has been reengineered for 64-bit and all of Apple’s apps now support 64-bit. It will continue to support 32-bit apps as well.
It runs OpenGL ES 3.0 like the Nexus 7. This allows better Reflections and lens flares. Also gives impressive photo-realism for gaming. Much more details such as skin texture, shadows etc on games.
Apple also announces the release of Infinity Blade 3. Have to admit it looks pretty good on the iPhone 5S screen. The graphic details are stunning.
The iPhone 5S’ home button is round with a silver ring. More details on that awaited.
11.00 pm: iPhone 5C features
The iPhone 5C has an eight-megapixel camera, A6 chip, better battery than the iPhone 5, 1.2 megapixel front camera and 4G, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi etc. Apple has priced the 16 GB version at $99 and 32 GB version at $199 but on a two-year contract.
Apple says it supports more LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world.
Jony Ive in Apple iPhone 5C video: “iPhone 5C is beautifully, unapologetically plastic.” The back casing is polycarbonate.
We still don’t know the price of the phone without contract.
10.50 pm: iPhone 5C is here people
Tim Cook has now moved on to talks about the iPhone. Yup , there are two new phone. Tim Cook confirms iPhone 5 will be replaced with two new designs.
Phil Schiller is on stage and he’s talking about the iPhone 5C. The C stands for colour and as the rumour mills said the iPhone 5C will come with hardware of the iPhone 5.
The colours for the iPhone 5C are: Green, white, blue, pink, and yellow. Apple says the device is made entirely from one part and you can’t see joints. It has also created custom cases with a “soft-fell silicon rubber.” Okay then.
The colourful iPhones do look like fun but the back casing is definitely plastic. Will the compromise on Apple’s build quality go down well with Apple loyalists? Let’s see.
Frankly I like the Green iPhone.
10.45 pm iOS 7 will be released on 18th September
That is a long wait. And Tim Cook already said at the event that when iOS is released there have been nights where pretty much all Apple users are downloading the new OS. iOS 7 will support iPhone 4 and later, ipad 2 and higher, iPad Mini, and iPod Touch fifth generation.
Tim Cook is now talking about iWork, iPhoto and iMovie which will be free with any new iOS device. My question is “Are they free on my old iOS device when I upgrade to iOS 7?” Not sure yet.
10.40 pm iOS 7 is on its way
Tim Cook confirms that iOS 7 is complete. He says,”Next month, we will ship the 700 millionth iOS device.” Again a big number for Apple.
Apple’s Craig Federighi is giving a recap of iOS 7 features. From Siri to the new Notifications centre, this is pretty much the same as what was revealed at the WWDC in June. The new Camera app in iOS 7 has filters for photo-editing. A lot of Android phones are already offering such features, so it’s good that Apple is finally doing this as well.
Will it get people off Instagram? That waits to be seen.
Meanwhile Apple’s stock is up as the announcement open.
