At the Worldwide Developers Conference event held in June this year, Apple surprised the world when they took the wraps off the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. This laptop came equipped with a great configuration, and should be sufficient for most people. If you are still not happy with the available storage or the RAM that came preloaded in the notebook, then Apple have recently added a page on their website, which lists the available hardware upgrades for Retina Display MacBook Pro notebooks.
The Retina Display MacBook Pro is available in two models, one with a 2.3GHz CPU and the other with a 2.6GHz CPU. If you wish to upgrade the model with a 2.3GHz processor, Apple is offering two options. You could either update your system to a 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost upto 3.6GHz, by paying $100 (Rs. 5,550) or upgrade it to a 2.7GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz for $350 (Rs. 19,426). The brand is also offering the ability to upgrade storage on the low-end MacBook Pro with Retina Display to either 512GB or 768GB. For the 512GB flash storage, a customer will need to pay $500 (Rs. 27,751) and for the 768GB, $1,000 (Rs. 55,503).
Hardware upgrade options available on Apple's website
A report by MacRumors states, “Previously, customers who opted for the base model were locked into a 2.3 GHz Core i7 processor and 256 GB of flash storage, with the only configurable onboard option being a $200 RAM upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB.”
Initially, when Apple put up the page displaying the hardware options available, there were a few issues which prompted them to take the page down. In an updated post by the site, MacRumors states, “The new configuration options are now appearing more consistently, and Apple has also added the ability to have individual iWork apps preinstalled. With the move to the Mac App Store, it is not difficult for users to obtain the apps on their own, but some customers will undoubtedly prefer to have their machines as ready to go as possible upon delivery.”
For those not in the know, the Macbook Pro with Retina Display comes configured with a solid state drive. The notebook comes with USB 3.0 and is far thinner than its predecessors with the same screen size, with the casing measuring 0.71 inches thin. The Macbook Pro received an Ivy Bridge update, and the 2.7GHz Ivy Bridge processors can be turbo boosted to 3.7 GHz. Furthermore, the device utilizes NVIDIA GeForce GT 650m graphics. Coming to the main selling point of the device, the Retina Display, it has a screen resolution of 2880 x 1800 (or 220 ppi). Apple also promised at the keynote that this improved screen would have better viewing angles, reduced glare and better contrast ratios.
Other highlighted features of the stock MacBook with Retina Display include 16GB of RAM, Nvidia Kepler GT 650M graphics, a quad-core 2.7GHz Core i7 processor, a maximum 768GB of SSD storage, a battery life of upto seven hours, and a standby time of 30 days. Apple has also added the thin MagSafe connector and a new fan. The Macbook Pro ships with OS X Lion. However, those who purchase the notebook now will be eligible for a free upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion when it becomes available.
