Research in Motion is looking forward to further strengthening its sales in the Indian sub region with a slew of upcoming CDMA BlackBerry phones. RIM is currently planning to get its 8530 model back into the market at a price that is lower by twelve percent than what it was selling at earlier. The 8530 is slated to sell for Rs. 11,990 now. This also comes as good news to the CDMA providers in the country, namely Tata Teleservices, MTS India and Reliance Communications. To those of you who have mixed up the numbers, the Curve 8530 and 8520 are identical, with the former one being a CDMA device and the latter a GSM one. What’s also worthy to mention is that the Curve 8520 is selling for a lot cheaper and is below the 10K price tag in the market at the moment.
BlackBerry gearing up towards CDMA dominance
“Smartphones are getting popular day by the day, but a majority of these are on GSM technology. While CDMA mobile phones have been popular, there is a very little choice for consumers when it comes to CDMA smartphones. And that is why we are re-launching Curve 8530,” said RIM India Head of CDMA business Francis Jose. He also mentioned that, “People are ready to pay top dollar for good devices. CDMA technology has been known to provide great data experience and smartphones ensure that.”
As reported by Telecomlead, a few statistics from TRAI paint a slightly different picture though. In September 2011 itself, the subscriber base for CDMA in the country dipped from 114.36 million to 112.42 million. Reliance is the largest CDMA mobile operator with 55.03 million subscribers.
As of now, RIM has the following set of CDMA smartphones in the country. The BlackBerry Style 9670, the BlackBerry Curve 9330, the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the Curve 9350. With their focus now including CDMA devices, we might see Research in Motion aim for a firm stronghold in the Indian subcontinent. Even though it’s currently fading in other countries, its favouritism for the masses has only increased in recent times. More BlackBerry CDMA devices coming in the near future? We’ll have to wait and watch.
