In a response to an Australian campaign started in January, Motorola revealed that their future mobile phones will have unlocked bootloaders later this year.
Motorola devices as a developing platform
According to Ausdroid.net, who contacted Motorola, it was revealed that an unnamed source from Motorola claimed that they completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user and wants to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. Motorola also stated their intention to enable the unlockable / relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across their portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it.
Motorola later confirmed the above claim when Will Moss, Director of Communications – North Asia, in Motorola Mobility stated that he could confirm that the quote is accurate, but couldn’t add anything at the time other than that further information would be released via MOTODEV (http://www.motorola.com/developer) when it becomes available.
All you Android developers should be eager for the unlocking of this bootloader, hopefully more manufacturers will follow suit and open up their devices for developers.
