Recently, it was reported that Pod2G and his team of hackers from the Chronic Dev Team released an untethered jailbreak for iDevices using Apple’s A5 chipset, such as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. This jailbreak, like all other jailbreaks in the past will give iOS device users the option to extend the capabilities of their device by using tweaks and settings that Apple has not provided with the stock OS. However, when the jailbreak was released it was available only for Apple Mac devices and there was no option for Windows users to use this untethered jailbreak. Now, according to a report by iPhonefaq, this untethered jailbreak has been extended to Windows users, too.

Untethered jailbreak coming soon for devices using the A5 chip

Untethered jailbreak has arrived for Windows

This jailbreak is completely untethered and can be installed on any device that runs on Apple’s latest iOS – iOS 5.0.1. Those using Windows PCs will have to first back-up their device and then update their device to the latest OS, which is iOS 5.0.1. Like with the Mac version, the iPad 2 Wi-Fi only version needs to run on iOS 5.0.1. The iPad 2 3G and the iPhone 4S can be jailbroken, if they are running on iOS 5.

So here is what one needs to do after they have backed up the device:

  • Download Absinthe for Windows or through the mirror link
  • Unzip the file
  • Run the absinthe.exe file after extracting it
  • Tether the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 to the Windows PC using the sync cable
  • Click Jailbreak

The rest of the process is similar to that of the Mac version, where the iPhone screen will display a message saying Restore in Progress. This may take a few minutes and after the device reboots, an Absinthe widget will appear on the device. Tap the widget and let the device do the needful. Once this finishes, the device will reboot with the Cydia icon appearing onscreen. This shows that the iOS device has been successfully jailbroken.

This form of jailbreak has been really successful and in an announcement on the Dev-team blog, the hackers have said that there have been ‘953,232 new A5 jailbreaks in a little over 3 days.’ They break the numbers down further by saying that 491,325 new iPhone 4 devices and 308,967 new iPad2 devices have already been jailbroken. As a word of caution they state that those who are jailbreaking their device should never update their firmware, until a new jailbreak is available and that this is especially for those who are using the A5 chip.

Do let us know if you’re going to be jailbreaking your iOS device, since the untethered jailbreak is finally available.
