On March 16th, Twitterverse was filled with birthday greetings to the microblog. Yesterday, on March 21st, the social network received another round of birthday shout outs (CEO Jack Dorsey himself wished his service happy birthday). Come July 15th, Twitter will receive another round of birthday greetings. Aside from being lucky enough to have not one but three birthdays in the eyes of its fans, there is a little bit of fuzz around Twitter's 'birthday'.
Dorsey says 'Happy Birthday'
According to Dorsey's tweets, Twitter was conceptualized on March 16, 2006. Dorsey and Biz Stone through the company Odeo (a podcast company). On March 21, 2006, Dorsey sent out the first tweet saying, “just setting up my twttr”. Still more work was done on the microblog (which started out as an SMS service for communication within small groups) and on July 15th, Twitter was launched to the masses. At that point, Twitter still wasn't its own company, it belonged to Odeo and then Obvious Corporation (formed by former board members of Odeo, Dorsey, Stone and Evan Williams included). In March 2007, Twitter was presented at SxSW (some people still erroneously believe that that's when Twitter launched). In April 2007, Twitter spun off into its own company.
So what it comes down to is what you think a birthday is. Twitter was conceived on March 16th and on a very minute scale was presented to the world on March 21st. On July 15th, it was properly launched and everyone outside of Odeo was able to use the service. Dorsey's wishing his service Happy Birthday on the 21st (understandable). However, as a Twitter user, this reporter has Twitter calendar-ed for the 15th of July.
