Google CEO Larry Page has just given a no-holds barred interview to Wired where he’s talked about the competition, Android and Google’s innovation-centred, futuristic projects like Glasses, Self Driving cars, etc. You can read the full interview here and this is definitely worth the long read.

The interview gives a fascinating account of everything that is going on at Google and this includes the stuff that doesn’t always make it outside the inner office/circle of Google employees. More importantly it gives us a rare glimpse into Larry Page, the inventor and not just the Google CEO. Remember it was Page who invented PageRank, which is the foundation of Google’s search-ranking algorithm.

For instance Page talks about how he wanted to do the self-driven cars, while he was a student a Stanford, nearly 14 years back. He says, The only thing that changed was we got the guts to actually do it.

Page also talks about the competition between tech companies and seems almost despondent that tech companies are today creating nothing new but just trying to out do each other at the same thing.

He says, I worry that something has gone seriously wrong with the way we run companies. If you read the media coverage of our company, or of the technology industry in general, it’s always about the competition… How exciting is it to come to work if the best you can do is trounce some other company that does roughly the same thing? That’s why most companies decay slowly over time. They tend to do approximately what they did before, with a few minor changes.

The Google CEO also talks about competition with Apple and Facebook. When asked about Steve Jobs’ thermonuclear threat for Android, he repliessuccinctly,How well is that working?Page is right in being smug as Google’s Android is running on 75 percent of the world’s smartphones unlike Apple which is at number two right now.

As far as Facebook is concerned, he has a more scathing comment to make. When asked about Google’s ‘competitiveness’ against Facebook in the social realm, Page said that Facebook is doing a really bad job on their products and he insists that what Google is doing in the social networking field isdifferent from Facebook.

With Facebook launching the Graph Search, many see this as the first step by the social network site into web search, an area where Google has dominated for the last two decades. Facebook’s Graph Search is no Google killer, sayanalysts, and for now Page doesn’t think so either.
