Facebook is in the process of making the new Timeline format compulsory for every user. However, according to a study done by IT security and data protection firm, Sophos, 51 percent of Facebook users are concerned about the Timeline feature. Timeline presents your entire Facebook history, as well as any personal history you choose to put in, in a chronological order. Facebook has given its users a week's notice to delete any old content they would like to, before the feature goes live on their profile. Sophos finds that there are concerns that the additional information that other users have access to and the greater ease to access user information will make it easier for identity thieves and stalkers to get information, which they can then abuse.
Seems fun but garners concern
Sophos conducted a poll of more than 4,100 random respondents from various parts of the world on their opinion of the new Timeline feature. The key findings of the study were:
- 51 percent of users are worried about the new Facebook Timeline feature
- Only 8 percent of users like the new Facebook Timeline feature
- 8 percent of users say they will get used to it
- 32 percent say they don't know why they are still on Facebook
Graham Chuley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos says, “The Facebook Timeline will be a wake-up call to some that they have shared too much in the past, too freely. In my case, the Timeline was the catalyst to reassess my relationship with Facebook. If nothing else, Facebook users should take this opportunity to re-evaluate what they share online. It is time to spring clean your Facebook account and online friend relationships, and ensures that you are only sharing what you want to share, with who you want to share it with. After all, a website which holds details on your entire life, likes and loves, is gold dust to scammers.”
For those users who have made the switch, did you clean up your Timeline before it went live? Do you think every single piece of information that's on your Timeline will really matter? Are you worried about Timeline? Let us know in the comments section below.
