If you’ve paid a visit to your Twitter account since last night, you would’ve seen Alok Nath, the quintessential father-of-the-bride in Bollywood movies on the top of the trending charts in India. The section, usually occupied by celebrities who’ve said something stupid or by people who have passed away, has a surprise addition today in the form of Bollywood's 'Father'.

While the appearance of the hashtag on the topics is thanks to people cracking witty jokes on Nath’s stereotypical character in Hindi movies, we don't know exactly when it started. For those of you who’ve skipped the million reruns of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Nath has been a staple character in the Sooraj Barjatya genre of movies. Essentially, Nath is famous for playing a father of a well-cultured set of children, and his only wish in life is to see them settled down (read: married) and then forge deep friendships with the new “samdhi-samdhans”, or the new in-laws.

There are multiple theories about how this viral trend started. While some say it was thanks to Hum Saath Saath Hain being aired on TV last night, others believe last week's #BollywoodTaughtUs trend, where too Nath was mentioned in quite a few tweets, gave birth to this whole new trend of jokes. As of today, there have been over 27,000 jokes on Twitter around Nath, according to Topsy.

Here are some hilarious – and really punny – jokes on Alok “Babuji” Nath:
