It was just a normal business day for this 75-year old metal scavenger from Georgia, except that it ended with her being awarded a 3 year jail sentence. Her crime, you ask? In a bid to earn off some money by selling a wire (a fibre-optic wire, which in this case provided internet connectivity to several thousands in Georgia and neighboring Armenia), she compromised internet connectivity of thousands.
Snapped! (Image courtesy: eweekeurope.co.uk)
With intentions of selling it for scrap, she snapped the wire fully unaware that at the very second, internet connectivity for thousands was snapped as well. The connections weren’t restored until 12 hours later. She was arrested by the Georgian police on charges of damaging property, and would have had to serve a 3-year spell in imprisonment. However, considering her age, the charges will be minimized.
Although not intentional, the woman for sure brought business to a grinding halt for a major part of the day. This, however, isn’t a one-of-its kind incident as in 2009, Georgia experienced a similar snapping of internet connectivity because of a metal scavenger attempting to steal it.
