Ads have easily been one of Google's most controversial businesses. Seeing ad results correspond to one's searches is quirky, by all means and Google did face a lot of flak for it (remember Gmail Man!?). Now, however, Google's going great lengths to ensure that Google ads have transparency in their functioning, and give the lay user more control over what shows up on their page. It has in this bid, rolled out an addition to its Google Ads feature, promptly called “Why these ads”. As the name suggests, this new feature will show the user how a particular ad landed on their search page. In an official blog post, announcing this new feature, Google stated that it believes, “to show the right ad to the right person at the right time.”
The post further stated that now, every search advertisement on Google will come with a “Why these ads” link, clicking on which a user will be shown as to why they could see a particular ad on their search results page, and how Google personalized it. For example, if the user is in a different location, say if he's on a vacation and is looking out for good, local restaurants, then the ads showing up will be about local restaurants in this new location. Interestingly, using the Ads Preference Manager, users can decide and control the ads on their page. This means that, if a user dislikes a certain ad popping up on his page, all he has to do is click on “Block this advertiser”. Users can undo these settings, too.
