Google have released the Application Programming Interface (API) for their URL shortener So don’t be surprised if you see being used in applications and web pages soon.

Let the app it for you

Google’s URL shortener was released back in September but only after this API release can developers programmatically access all of the services that are available via the web interface. The API will allow shortening and expanding of URLs, as well as fetching of history and Analytics data.

Ben D’Angelo, part of Google’s URL shortener team had this to say. “We’re very excited to be able to offer you this API to access one of the fastest URL shorteners out there. We’re continuing to work on several usability improvements and to make our auto-detection of spammy or malicious content even more robust. We hope that with the new API, you’ll find to be even more useful in your future shortening endeavors!”

You can check out the API in the Google Code Labs here.
