The rumour mills went into a frenzy over the last few days with HTC putting up a rather strange image on their official Twitter page. The image was a screenshot of HTC One X featuring a voice recognition software, much like Apple’s Siri or Samsung’s S-Voice. But the catch here is that it is a conversation between a dog and the handset, wherein the latter responds to the barks of the dog. Many speculated that HTC could possibly be releasing a voice recognition software of their own to rival Siri or S-Voice. However, a follow-up tweet by HTC’s Jeff Gordon has cleared the air stating this was not the case and it was a fake designed for HTC’s Pet Week.

In a report by Android Community author Cory Gunther states, “It looks like HTC has been having some fun this afternoon at the expense of blogs and HTC Android fans everywhere. Tossing up a picture on their official Twitter teasing an upcoming S-Voice and Siri rival voice assistant program — only for dogs. Everyone quickly jumped on it thinking the dog part was just a cover, but yes, this was indeed fake.” The report adds, “After posting the photo there was a wave of comments, speculation, and posts popping up everywhere, but it appears this was indeed a fake for “pet week” — confirmed by Jeff Gordon at HTC.”

Voice recognition software such as Siri and S-Voice have assisted many users since their launch on the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S III, respectively, and with this image, all indications pointed to the fact that HTC was set to unveil their own voice-based personal assistant for their handsets. HTC is expected to show off their next Sense user interface in the near future and this would have been a great addition to have onboard, if it did happen to be true.

On the other hand, this could also be a marketing trick by HTC and they could have indeed teased a voice recognition software that may be unveiled with the upcoming Sense UI. But as of now, this is mere speculation and since dismissed by Jeff Gordon, one should take this with a pinch of salt.

The report states, “Between Apple’s Siri and Samsung’s new S-Voice, the voice helpers on mobile devices have been a hotly discussed topic as of late. Google is preparing their own codenamed Project Majel that we’ve heard will be shown off at Google I/O next week as Google Assistant, so this was pretty good timing HTC. HTC’s “Top Secret” new voice assistant was looking very similar to Siri and other options, being able to take appointments, share weather alerts and all that jazz but we have a feeling they’ll just wait for Google’s Assistant to arrive with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Whether HTC is working on their own Siri voice assistant rival or not is still unknown. This could technically go both ways and they are just calming the waters for now.”
