There’s always a flurry of excitement when operating systems are ported over between different hardware. The HP Touchpad had its share of the spotlight with the Android port and now, we’ve got something that might just be even bigger than that. The MeeGo running N9 has been ported to run Ice Cream Sandwich by Alexey Roslyakov.

Looks beautiful, doesn't it?

As reported by Slash Gear, this porting is a part of the NITDroid project that the modder has been working on. There were attempts to get Android onto the Nokia N900, earlier too, but with this new experiment, Alexey has made an inroad to port ICS over to the Nokia N9 smartphone, but there’s still no publicly available guide for this dual booting procedure that he’s managed to achieve.

The Nokia N9 was touted to be an amazing smartphone when it was launched, last year, but Nokia’s focus soon shifted to Microsoft and the new Windows Phones. As a result, their MeeGo ecosystem didn’t receive the appropriate resources and dedication to flourish. One of the biggest drawbacks was the limited app support. So, what has happened to MeeGo? It’s been given to Tizen for now, and Nokia will decide about its fate, back in their research and development labs, but we’re not too sure if we’ll get to see it on any of their upcoming next gen devices.

Now if this port is actually possible (read: stable and noob support), it’s going to be one hell of an exciting path for Nokia’s existing smartphone users. Nokia, with their brilliant design and build quality, and Android, with its powerful operating system definitely look like a match made in heaven. This port has been hitting a few roadblocks with trying to match the hardware with the Android kernel, but efforts are still on to get something concrete out of this.

Maemo.org is partially overlooking the details and progress about this new port. Ice Cream Sandwich on a Nokia smartphone will definitely be a dream come true. It’s still a major work in progress, but we’re hoping for some good news, sometime.
