India has always been considered as a growing market in terms of Internet penetrationm, but a latest report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) tends to suggest the opposite.

A recently released report by TRAI suggests that the broadband subscriber base in India is depleting slowly. The report mentioned an increase in the broadband subscriber base in India to 15.05 million in March 2013 from 15 million in the month of February. This meant that only 50,000 more people had subscribed to the Internet connection in the span of one month. Though it was better than the previous month, the numbers had actually shrunk when compared to January.

The report states that the rapid mobile data adoption can be one of the main reasons behind this slow growth as consumers today wish to access Internet more on the go. Though the country is yet to see a significant increase in 3G usage, such a move, along with a widening base of 4G users, will only benefit mobile broadband.

A paper published by Cisco also expects that the data consumption on smartphones and tablets will be three times more than on the desktop Internet by 2017.

In terms of broadband service market share among the Internet service providers, the state-run telecom firm BSNL continues to have the largest share with 66 percent followed by Bharti Airtel who enjoys 9.3 percent. MTNL completes the podium with 7.2 percent while others sum up for the remaining 17.5 percent share. TRAI had recorded a total of 161 Internet service providers in India.
