Something seems to be wrong in the Instagram offices. Since this morning, Twitter has been filled with outraged Instagram users complaining about their accounts being deleted, allegedly for violating terms and services.
Looking at the amount of tweets, it seems like the problem is a widespread one, with users being unsure of what caused Instagram to delete their accounts. When attempting to log in to the service, a message pops on the screen that reads, “Your account has been disabled due to terms of service violations.”

9to5Mac notes that some users reported that their accounts were being shut for not posting images from the app’s built-in camera. Though the explanation sounds dicey, the pattern of account deletion has been rather erratic and inconsistent. All hipsters here at tech2, though, have reported that their accounts are intact, before running off to click images of the office cat.
Word now is that Instagram is starting to restore some of the accounts that were deleted temporarily citing terms of service violations. Like it is wont to during widespread outages of these sorts, Instagram is now full of fake images apparently from the Instagram staff, asking users to repost them. “Instagram is currently having technical difficulties so your account may get deleted,” reads an image. “In order to not get deleted, repost this picture and tag @dontdeletemyig. Thank you for your patience – Instagram Staff.”
For now, the official Instagram accounts on Facebook and Twitter as well as the official blog seem mum on the issue. It could well be a temporary outage that is leading to accounts being suspended. We will keep you updated when Instagram reveals more details. Let us know in the comments if your account has been suspended too.
