With AMD Fusion APUs like E-series ‘Zacate’ and C-series ‘Ontario’-based netbooks selling like hotcakes, Intel’s once popular Atom-based microchips have taken a backseat in terms of sales. This is primarily due to the fact that AMD’s chips offer better bang-for-buck by offering stronger multimedia capabilities and better battery life. Intel’s Cedar Trail microchips seem almost ready and now thanks to a datasheet uploaded by Intel themselves, they’ve revealed further details about the upcoming 32nm CPUs. The N2000 series will make its way to netbooks and other mobile devices, while the D2000 series will come to desktops and nettops.

Some more info on the new chips

There’ll be two models available from each series at launch. The N2600 will be limited to just 2GB of RAM while the N2800 will support a maximum of 4GB. Also, the former chip will only accept a single DIMM slot, while all the others will support two. This seems like a deliberate limitation from Intel’s part and will probably go up against the C-series APUs from AMD. The onboard GPU has gotten a significant boost and now supports DisplayPort, HDMI 1.3a, LVDS and D-sub connectivity. As you can see from the resolution chart, video-out through LVDS (that’s the connection between the video card and your laptops display) is limited to 1366×768 for the N2000 series. While this seems a bit low, remember that this chip will be used primarily in netbooks, which don’t go beyond that resolution. Video-out through the other connectors, however will support Full HD resolutions. The new GPUs will also support hardware decoding of MPEG 2, VC1, WMV, H.264 video streams up to 1080p. Oddly, there’s no hardware based Flash support beyond 11.0.
