Intel’s new Sandy Bridge E processors might be 6-cores and that’s a big deal for many of us. On the server chip front, Intel has hardware such as the codenamed Knights Corner chip. The chip was shown off at the SC11 conference held in Seattle, this week. The new processor is based on the new Intel Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture. The chip is capable of performances of more than 1 Teraflops of double precision floating point on a benchmark called DGEMM. Intel had demonstrated a similar system back in 1997, where 9680 Pentium Pro processors were used to achieve Teraflops' performance. This was done on a Sandia Lab’s ASCII RED system, back then. A similar performance can now be got from a single chip.
A glimpse into the future…
The Knights Corner chip will be based on the 22nm fabrication process using Intel’s 3D-transistor technology. Intel claims that the new processor will not need developers to port existing applications to a new platform. Users, primarily scientists who will use it for x86 applications will be able to harness the power of the chip. Intel also has new Xeon E5 processors that will be launched sometime next year. They are based on the recently launched desktop processor architecture, Sandy Bridge.
