Apple has updated iOS to version 6.1, which adds LTE capabilities to the iPhone 5 across 36 additional carriers. Users of the new iPad can also enjoy LTE across 23 iPad carriers around the world. However, India is not one of the countries on the list, which means the iPhone 5 and the new iPad are limited to HSPA+ speeds here. iOS 6.1 is available right now as a free software update and is compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad (third and fourth generation), iPad mini, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth and fifth generation).

The company also announced that to date, iOS users have uploaded over nine billion photos to Photo Stream, sent over 450 billion messages through Apple’s iMessage app and received over four trillion notifications. During Apple’s earnings report last week, CEO Tim Cook stated that more than 500 million iOS devices have been sold across the world. Given the figure released today, nearly 60 percent of all iOS devices are using iOS 6 and can now update to the latest version.
Additional updates in iOS 6.1 bring the much-awaited ability to use Siri to purchase movie tickets in the United States through Fandango. Moreover, iTunes Match subscribers can now download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud, Apple’s cloud storage service.
“iOS 6 is the world's most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history,” said Philip Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads.“
Apple released iOS 6 alongside the new iPhone last year. It brought multi-language support for Siri, easy access to sports scores, restaurant recommendations and movie listings. However, the home-grown Maps app, which was introduced with much fanfare at the time, faced heavy criticism from users globally for a number of geographical errors, missing information and incomplete neighbourhoods. iOS 6 also brought in some things that worked well, though, such as the Facebook integration, ability to post directly from the notifications, Siri and Facebook-enabled apps, shared photo streams and Passbook.
The 6.1 update comes after months of beta releases by the Cupertino-based company. Apple released five different beta versions of the update to give developers a taste of what to come and keep updated versions of apps ready.
