A few hours ago, Google provided a tasty treat for developers and modders by announcing the release of the Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean source code. This move by Google to release the source code is part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and is available for download to anyone looking to work on builds for their Android devices.
As per a statement by Jean-Baptiste M. “JBQ” Queru, Technical Lead, Android Open Source Project, Google, said, “We're releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today. The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1. The name of the development branch is jb-dev. We recommend that you create new clients, even if you're working in the master branch. It'll make your clients smaller and faster to sync. Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus S and Xoom will follow.”
Source code available
Commenting on this announcement, a report by Ubergizmo states, “This is good news for Cyanogen Mod fans which will definitely speed up the process of CM10 now that the source code is available.” In a related report regarding the source code being made available, a report by The Verge states, “There's still no word on when users can expect proper factory images for any of the above devices, but they should come after the OTA updates begin rolling out.”
Google recently announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at this year’s Google I/O conference and Commenting on the latest operating system, Google states Jelly Bean builds on top of Ice Cream Sandwich. This OS makes everything smoother, faster and more fluid. They claim that notifications are now more dynamic. Elaborating on this feature, they state that if one is late for a meeting or missed a call, and then they can send an e-mail or call directly from notifications. With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google claims that the keyboard is smarter and more accurate, and can predict the user’s next word. Another interesting feature is that voice typing is faster, working even when one does not have a data connection.
Google state that they have redesigned search from the ground up in Jelly Bean, with a new user interface and faster, more natural Voice Search. They go on to state that one can type their query or simply ask Google a question. Google can speak back, delivering a precise answer, powered by the Knowledge Graph, if it knows one, in addition to a list of search results.
Google claims, “Today’s smart devices still rely on you to do pretty much everything—that is, until now. Google Now is a new feature that gets you just the right information at just the right time. It tells you today’s weather before you start your day, how much traffic to expect before you leave for work or your favorite team's score as they’re playing. There’s no digging required: cards appear at the moment you need them most.”
The main highlighted features of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean are Project Butter, Text Input, Camera, Notifications and Android Beam.
