While Micromax is setting the benchmark among Indian manufacturers, Karbonn isn’t so far behind. The company has launched a new tablet with the scarily-long name Karbonn Smart Tab TA Fone A 37 Kommunicate 3G (phew!). The tablet, which we will call the A 37 now on for obvious reasons, is available at an online retailer for Rs 9,490. The tablet will supposedly ship within three days of booking.

The A 37 has a 7-inch, capacitive WVGA (800 x 480) display. It is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor and has 512MB of RAM. The operating system on the tablet is Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The tablet has a mere 4GB of internal storage, but that can be expanded up to 32GB via the microSD card slot. The camera on the back of the A 37 is a 2-megapixel unit, while a VGA camera does duty on the front. The A 37 is a dual-SIM (WCDMA+GSM) tablet and users can access the Internet using 3G and make voice calls too. Other connectivity options on board include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Here are the key specs of the Karbonn Smart Tab Ta-Fone A 37 Kommunicate 3G:

  • 7-inch capacitive display with 800 x 480-pixel resolution
  • Dual-SIM, 3G, GPRS/EDGE, voice calling
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS
  • 2-megapixel rear camera and VGA front camera
  • 4GB of internal memory, expandable up to 32 GB via microSD card

The A 37 comes with a 3,000mAh battery, which should last long enough considering the specs of the tablet.

The 7-inch budget tablet segment is seeing quite a bit of competition. Karbonn’s latest tablet will go up against the Micromax Funbook Talk P360, which was also announced today. The Funbook Talk P360 tablet also brings voice calling, but falls short of the A 37 due to lack of a 3G radio. It is also slightly underpowered in comparison, but has 1GB of RAM. The 2-megapixel rear camera and the 0.3-megapixel front camera are nothing to write home about, but should be good enough for very basic photo shoots. The tablet supports a wide range of video formats such as avi, mp4, 3gp, flv, wmv, mkv and mpeg. Micromax says it can also play 1080p videos.
