LG’s Optimus G was one of the most exciting handsets of last year and this year the company is planning to up the ante with the Optimus G2. Till now we have seen some pictures of the phone and also a glimpse of the weird volume button arrangement under the camera on the back. A new set of images and a video acquired by Engadget reveals more for those eagerly awaiting this smartphone.

The new images confirm that LG will be going with on-screen buttons instead of the capacitive ones we first saw on the Optimus G. The G had squared-off edges and a rectangular look, while the G2 has Nexus 4-like curved edges, which do look pleasing. The display is said to be 5.2-inches diagonally and has a 1080p resolution in keeping with the competition. Amazingly, LG has managed to narrow down the bezels on the G2 to almost non-existsent size. As a result, the phone is more compact than some of its rivals.

The video leaked by 4Leakz shows a slim device and the display really pops out in the sneak peek. The G2 will have NFC capabilities. Here’s the video:

The website’s source says that the camera on the G2 will be a 13 megapixel affair and the weird volume rocker placement could also be used for zoom controls on the camera. The tipster says the G2 will be powered by a Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz, the processor which will be seen in the Xperia Z Ultra too. It’s paired with 2GB of RAM for smoother performance.

Screenshots reveal that the phone will run Android 4.2.2 with LG’s Optimus UI on top. There are some changes and most notably, the launcher, the camera UI and the lockscreen have been revamped. The unlock animation is a spiffy-looking polygon that gives you a peek at what’s under the lockscreen. Battery capacity is still a mystery. The LG Optimus G2 will be announced on August 7, so we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
