It seems LinkedIn sees benefit in both the Facebook model and the Twitter model for professional social networking. The service already allows you to add “friends” in the form of contacts, and now, LinkedIn has added a “Follow” button on company pages, so you can keep up with them more easily, when you're logged in. This new feature is a lot like Twitter's main function or liking a company page on Facebook. LinkedIn announced in a blog post that these buttons will help make it easier to follow companies of interest.
To start following a company, you have to click the “follow” button on a company's page, when you're logged in and as long as you are logged in, you will receive company status updates on your LinkedIn homepage. If you are not logged in, you will see a pop up box asking you for your login information. Once you've typed that in, you're automatically following the company. Once you are logged in and are following a company, they will engage with you via status updates. You can keep up with company news, see if there are employment opportunities, and follow industry trends when you start following. LinkedIn has over 2 million companies in its network across industries, company sizes and geographies. LinkedIn likes adding “buttons” to offer more services. Last year, the service added a button that would let users apply to jobs. By clicking the button, users would submit their LinkedIn profile as their resume. The button, however, does not let you add a cover letter to your application. After you've clicked the button to send your profile, you can also ask people you know at the company, you're applying to for a referral.
