At first glance, the pi4 workerbot may look like someone dumped a big heap on metal on a trolley. But beneath this rather plain appearance, lies something very fascinating. The pi4 is a workerbot, that is roughly the same height as a human, which can be employed at any modern workstation in an industrial manufacturing environment.
The pi4 robot has 3 cameras which are placed on his head. One is a state-of-the-art 3D camera which it uses to capture its general surroundings, while the other 2 are used for inspection purposes. Matthias Krinke, Managing Director of pi4-Robotics says, “The cameras can help the robot identify whether or not the chromium coating on a workpiece has been perfectly applied by studying how light reflects off the material”. The robot can study two different aspects at the same time, using the cameras on either side.
As you can see in the above video, the arms of the robot are another distinctive feature. The robot can transfer a workpiece from one hand to the other with ease for carefully observing the components. This is due to the workerbot's additional rotation facility which corresponds to the wrist on a human body.
The pi4 also has another amazing feature, which is finger tip sensitivity. The pi4 can gauge the grip and strength required to hold a certain item – this allows it hold an egg without cracking it.
Completing the trifecta of features is the display, which can show a variety of different expressions. If the work goes smoothly, it will smile happily, but if not it will look sad and bored.
