UPDATE: Ira Rothken, defence lawyer for Megaupload told TorrentFreak that data on the file sharing site is safe from deletion for another two weeks. This push in date will allow Megaupload as well as authorities to come up with solutions. The authorities have already made selective backup of data they want to use as evidence but Megaupload would like to save all the data of their users.

Megaupload, the file sharing site that was shut down by the United States FBI might lose all data, this coming Thursday. According to the Guardian, data belonging to the users of Megaupload could be deleted on Thursday, even though deleting the data would make the defence much harder. The lawyer for the founders of Megaupload said that if the servers are wiped, defending his clients would become much more difficult. The U.S FBI has seven members in custody who are employees of Megaupload, including founder, Kim Dotcom. The website provided a file sharing service and was shut down for reasons of facilitating illegal sharing and downloading of music, movies and other content.

Megaupload uses outside companies to store data for a fee, and because their assets have been frozen, the storing companies will not receive their pay. One of the servers that Megaupload uses was based in Virginia in the United States, which is how the FBI were able to nab the website in the first place. Megaupload said that users stored family photos and other personal data on the service and if all the company's data were to be deleted, users would lose their personal files. Megaupload attorney, Ira Rothken said that at least 50 million Megaupload users were in danger of losing their personal material, as well, since defence would be made difficult, if the data was erased, the company was working very hard with prosecutors to not have the data erased.

Meanwhile, Megaupload founder, Kim Dotcom is in prison and according to Mashable, is losing his top spot in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, as a result. He is now number two, and given that he was denied bail, last Wednesday, he might remain in prison for a while and not get his top spot back. His name on the game is MEGARACER and he claimed the top spot in the game on New Year's Eve.
