Looks like Micromax has kept its word about the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean for their A110 Canvas 2 smartphone. The update, which was promised for this week, is now available through the Micromax FTP server or on the phone's dedicated section on the XDA Developers forums.

The Jelly Bean update was not destined to be an over-the-air update as told to us by Micromax last week. So users will have to flash the ROM manually. There is a step-by-step guideline for the process on the XDA thread. It has to be noted that a wrong step in the process could possibly lead to a bricked Canvas 2. However, users have the relatively easier option of walking into the nearest Micromax service centre to get their updates.

The Micromax A110 now has Jelly Bean!

The update, which brings goodies like Google Now, a Project Butter-optimised UI, offline voice typing and expandable notifications, clocks in at 282MB in size. It has also reportedly removed the M! Store app, which provided access to some of Micromax’s in-house apps. Finally, there are some new wallpapers and a new colour scheme which were seen in the Micromax A116 Canvas HD.

Before the roll-out of the official update, Canvas 2 users had to rely on third-party ROMs from other manufacturers to get Jelly Bean on their phones. However, that usually meant voiding the warranty or installing software that’s not properly optimised for the phone.

The A110 Canvas 2 was released in October 2012 and thanks to the launch of the Canvas HD is beginning to look a bit long in the tooth. However, in the months following its launch, it has proved to be a very popular phone for the Indian manufacturer.

It is a dual-SIM device, powered by 1GHz MediaTek MT6577 dual-core processor and has 512MB of RAM. In the imaging department, the A110 Canvas 2 packs in an 8-megapixel autofocus primary shooter accompanied by a dual-LED flash and a VGA front-facing unit. Both these aspects have been carried over the A116 as well. The smartphone comes with a 2,000 mAh battery.
