As per reports, Microsoft Windows sales haven’t affected their overall earnings. Microsoft has done exceedingly well in other areas. Sales of the Office productivity suite sales, as well as those of the Xbox 360 gaming console have been impressive. Netbook sales have been hit by the success of tablets in the market. Intel too doesn’t expect sales of desktops to be as high as previous years. This drop in PC and netbook sales is what is likely to hurt sales of the Windows operating system the most. Despite being hit by Windows’ earnings, Microsoft still managed to exceed Wall Street’s expectations.
Tablets eating into netbook share
The company’s strong hope is the launch of the Windows 8 operating system in 2012. With this launch, Microsoft hopes to capture a section of the tablet segment. The new Windows 8 operating system is said to run on ARM architecture as well as the traditional PC architecture. The operating system is said to be designed keeping tablets in mind. Currently, Apple owns the big chunk of chunk of the tablet market. Most of the other tablets run on Google's Android operating system.
