Microsoft's come to a point where they realize they had a good product ten years ago, and now it's time to kill it. They've started a website, the Internet Explorer 6 countdown, which aims to “Move the world off Internet Explorer 6”. The website is www.ie6countdown.com  and it clearly states that its motive is to watch IE 6 usage drop to less than 1% of the world. Agreed, IE6 is still used in some specialized government and corporate environments and intranets however, Microsoft wants to kill its usage as a regular consumer's browser. As the website says, “friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer 6” and Microsoft's taken the initiative so web developers don't have to waste their time developing for IE 6.

According to the site, India uses 12.3% of the world's share of Internet Explorer 6. China's got the world's top share with 34.5%. By Feb 2011, 12% of the world was using Internet Explorer 6 which is 9% lower than the previous year. I have to say, this initiative is pretty cool. The last time we saw marketing with some aggressive percentage usage was when Steve Jobs was comparing Apple products to its competitors but now it's interesting to see the percentages being used to kill a product without another being directly promoted. However, in a little twist, the website does suggest you download Internet Explorer 6 so you can view the countdown to its killing. So does Microsoft secretly still want people to use IE 6 (despite the percentages) until it pulls the plug so it goes out with a bang and not a whimper?
