Motorola has just launched the Moto E4 Plus and Moto E4 in the Indian market. The company is going all out to launch a number of devices ensuring that consumers across different price segments have a Motorola smartphone to choose from. The Moto E4 and E4 Plus mark the third product launch from Motorola in a month’s time. Motorola has priced the Moto E4 for Rs 8,999 and it will be available at retail stores across the country while the Moto E4 Plus will go on sale for Rs 9,999 exclusively on Flipkart at 11:59 PM on 12 July 2017.

This device will bridge the gap between the Moto C series and the Moto G series to provide budget devices for people who can’t afford the Moto G5 or G5 Plus but require something better than the Moto C Plus. It will compete with the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 4, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi Redmi 3S and Lenovo K6 Power in the budget segment. Motorola is trying to bring things like the latest Android Nougat 7.1.1 along with the improved Moto Display to the budget market where competition does not provide such things.

I got a chance to play with the device, and the device looks good for the price point. But can Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus hold their own in competition with Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4? Let’s have a quick look at how Moto E4 Plus stands in the crowded smartphone market.

Design and Build

Moto E4 Plus is a solid and sturdy device without any squeaking parts. The smartphone feels hefty and weighs on the heavier side. Motorola has done a good job by ensuring a metal back with plastic caps on the top and the bottom. The front of the device is an all-glass affair with an oleophobic coating to ensure that the display does not catch fingerprints.

However, the smartphone does not bring anything new to the market in terms of design and it looks almost similar to Moto C Plus. One thing to note here is that the company could have made the design around the antenna bands more flushed with the body. Currently, the edges look somewhat sharp at the intersection of the metal body with plastic caps at the sides on top and bottom.

Features

Moto E4 Plus will feature a 5.5-inch HD (720 x 1280 pixels) IPS LCD display with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen for protection. The E4 Plus will come with 3 GB RAM with 32 GB internal storage. Lenovo will offer expandable memory option with up to 128 GB using an external microSD card for both the phones.

Moto E4 Plus (9)

The Moto E4 and E4 Plus will be powered by a quad-core Mediatek MT6737 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz running Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Lenovo has added microUSB 2.0 port, FM radio, GPS, Bluetooth v4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. It will also come with an accelerometer and proximity sensors to enhance the feature-set of the device. Last but not the least, the E4 Plus also packs a massive 5,000 mAh non-removable lithium ion battery.

Display

Moto E4 Plus will feature a 5.5-inch HD (720 x 1280 pixels) IPS LCD display with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen for protection. The display seemed just fine as colours were not particularly vibrant, with a considerable amount of reflection on the screen.

The viewing angles provided by the IPS panel were decent with the smartphone still catching fingerprint and smudges despite the oleophobic coating.

Chipset, RAM, and storage

The Moto E4 Plus will be powered by a quad-core Mediatek MT6737 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz running Android 7.1.1 Nougat. During my limited period with the device, the Mediatek processor performed fine with no lags or problems.

Google Play Store did crash once while trying to install an app but everything worked fine without any issue after the initial hiccup. But we will have to wait for the detailed review before passing any judgment on how the device performs in the real world.

OS and Software

Motorola has announced Moto E4 Plus which was will sport Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box which makes it one of the very few companies in the world to ship the latest stable version of the Android out of the box. Motorola ensured that it is not moving away from its philosophy of delivering almost stock Android for easier and faster rollout.

Camera

E4 Plus features a 13 MP camera module with a f/2.0 aperture at the back and a 5 MP camera module with a f/2.2 aperture on the front, while the E4 will be having a smaller 8 MP rear camera. The camera performance was good while taking multiple shots in succession.

The photos were decent in the limited amount of time and subjects that I was allowed to shoot using the smartphone. One thing to note in the camera section is that both front and rear camera modules are equipped with a dedicated LED flash.

Connectivity and Battery

Lenovo has also added microUSB 2.0 port, NFC, FM radio, GPS, Bluetooth v4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n along with hotspot as connectivity options. E4 Plus also comes with an accelerometer and proximity sensors to enhance the feature-set of the device.

Last but not the least, the E4 Plus will pack a massive 5,000 mAh non-removable lithium ion battery for some serious battery backup

Conclusion

Moto E4 Plus is a compelling device for the price of Rs 9,999 in the Indian market. The smartphone performed well without any major hiccups during the 40 minutes I spend using the smartphone while exploring everything the operating system had to offer. Overall, the performance of the device along with improved design was good.

One thing to note is that Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Xiaomi Redmi 4 will provide a comprehensive challenge to Moto E4 Plus. We will have to run a number of detailed tests on the Moto E4 Plus before passing any judgment on the devices. For now, the first impressions are favorable.
