When it comes to Apple and their upcoming products, the list of anonymous sources and people familiar with the situation are ever in the plenty. These tipsters, who somehow managed to get a whiff about the upcoming iOS devices have revealed information about the next Apple iPhone, irrespective of whether it is going to be in the final version or not. As per a report by the Wall Street Journal, the next iPhone will feature a display that measures 4-inch diagonally and the production is slated to begin from next month.
As per the report, “The new iPhone that Apple Inc. is expected to unveil this year is likely to have a larger display than its current models have, with the company ordering bigger screens from its Asian suppliers, people familiar with the matter said. The new screens measure at least 4 inches diagonally, the people said, compared with 3.5 inches on Apple's latest model, the iPhone 4S. Production is set to begin next month, the people said. Analysts have predicted that the next iPhone will come out in the fall.” The sources have also informed WSJ that Apple will be working with a range of screen manufacturers on the next iPhone with companies like Sharp, LG and Japan Display Inc. believed to be the working with them to produce the handset.
The new dimensions based on rumours
In a related report, the author was quoted as saying, “It is likely all three of the screen suppliers will get production orders from Apple, which could begin as soon as June. That would allow the new iPhone to go into production as soon as August, if the company follows its own precedent in moving from orders for prototypes for key components to launch.” The report goes on to quote Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu who states, “Not only do users pay for features, but they also pay for aesthetics and design. That's as important, or more important, than features. People love the current design — but it's 18 months old.” He said that the increase in screen size would boost the wow factor associated with the phone.
Eversince Apple unveiled their first iPhone, the brand stuck with the 3.5-inch display and this was done primarily to avoid fragmentation. However, they are now facing stiff competition from other brands, mainly Samsung who have just introduced the Galaxy S III, which boasts of a screen size of 4.8-inch. From the looks of it, it seems more than likely that the brand may indeed opt for a larger screen size and not stick with the 3.5-inch that had been used on the past five generations of iPhones.
