With just five days to go before Google I/O kicks off, the rumour mill brings us more information about the next-gen Nexus 7 tablet.
An analyst from KGI Securities says that Google is about to unveil the second-generation Nexus 7 at Google I/O on May 15. The new Nexus 7 will obviously be an improvement over the last-gen model. KGI’s analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has sent out a research note obtained by Apple Insider, which talks about the potential specs of the tablet.
The new Nexus 7 will also be made by Asus, but nearly everything else is about to get a spruce up. For starters, the 7-inch display will be of the LTPS variety and will have a 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) resolution. It will be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor (APQ8064) unlike last year’s Nexus 7, which has an Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC.
The specs according to KGI Securities
Unlike the current tablet, the new 7-incher will get a camera on the back. It will be a 5 megapixel unit, according to KGI, and will be accompanied by an “HD front-facing camera“. Besides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth presence, there will also be an NFC chip along with wireless charging support to replenish the ample 4000 mAh battery. Interestingly, the note also reveals that the new Nexus 7 will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and not 5.0 Key Lime Pie, as was rumoured earlier. There’s no mention of internal storage, but we’d be very surprised if the base model doesn’t have at least 16GB.
About to be retired?
When it comes to design, Ming says the tablet will have a plastic body and a narrower bezel. In terms of price, the analyst believes Google would sell the device at $199 (approx Rs 11,000). It must be noted that these specs are unconfirmed at the moment.
In any case, we won’t have to wait too long to find out the actual specifications if the Google I/O announcement pans out. We’ll be bringing you all the happenings and announcements from Google I/O as soon as the event gets underway on May 15.
