There might be a lot happening in the mobile smartphone market with Android grabbing a big part of Apple’s pie. One might assume that large phone manufacturer Nokia might have lost their coveted number one position to either Apple or one of the Android mobile phone manufacturers. Turns out, that isn’t the case.
A big lead but not a large enough growth
According to a study done by IDC, Nokia still is the top smartphone manufacturer in the market. It holds a large 24.3 per cent share of the market followed by Apple with 18.7 per cent and RIM with 13.9 per cent. One thing’s for sure though, they aren’t seeing growth as much as some of the other vendors. Samsung for example, shipped 10.8 million units in the first quarter of 2011 as compared to 2.4 in early 2010. HTC was another brand that performed similarly, but not to the same extent as Samsung. Apple’s growth in the smartphone market also seems somewhat limited. Nokia tagging along with Microsoft on their upcoming smartphones should hopefully bring better growth when the first devices hit.
