The iPod Touch has been one of the best gadgets to come out of Apple’s workshop, but it seems the portable media player is also among the company’s top bread winners. According to a report by Loop, Apple has sold more than 100 million units of the iPod Touch since it was launched. This news comes close on the heels of the company’s quiet announcement of a cheaper 16GB iPod Touch yesterday.

The iPod Touch was launched in 2007, after the first iPhone hit the market. It looked and functioned much like the iPhone did: it let you browse the web, play games, run apps, and buy stuff from the Apple App Store. The only difference was the lack of a cellular antenna. 


The new iPod Touch will surely help with the sales

The portable media player market has been shrinking owing to the influx of low-cost smartphones, which do a very good job of letting you enjoy your media files on the go. Keeping this trend in mind, Apple has cleverly opted to offer the iPod Touch as a cheaper replacement for the iPhone. The company has been upgrading the line at almost the same time as the iPhone or iPad, enabling the media player to be sold as an affordable iOS device to people who’d rather opt for an Android or Windows Phone device as their primary mobile device.

The new iPod Touch unveiled yesterday comes sans the rear camera and features only the 1.3-megapixel front-facing “FaceTime HD camera”. It features a 4-inch Retina display, Apple’s A5 chip and Siri. Housed in an anodised aluminium body, like the 32GB and 64GB variants, it’s thinner than the iPhone 5 at just 6mm. It weighs 86gm.
