Since its launch date, back in April of 2011, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S II aka the I9100 shot to stardom and became an instant hit in the mobile community. Featuring, at the time, the world’s thinnest mobile shell, the Galaxy S II still managed to cram a list of versatile and high-end features into its slim form. From an 8 megapixel camera to a 1.2GHz Dual Core processor, Wi-Fi direct and much more, the S II was a very capable smartphone.  

Since the launch of the handset, Samsung Electronics has reported sales of the Galaxy S II topping the 20 million mark. The company itself have also come out on top, reporting phenomenal sales figures to take the crown of the world's top smartphone maker in 2011. Samsung’s previous Galaxy Model, the Galaxy S also exceeded the 22 million sales mark and is still in demand.

Post the Galaxy S’s success, Samsung launched numerous follow ups with tweaks in the specifications. Handsets like the Galaxy S LCD and the S Plus were born and while identical in looks, they had a few changes under the hood. To take things up a notch, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note, pushing the boundaries of the mobile phone space with this mini-tab. The Note has also carved a cozy little niche for itself and selling well enough to keep the Korean company quite happy. In fact, there have been rumours about Samsung having plans of launching a Note 10.1 (10.1-inch display) tablet, at MWC next week doing rounds.  

MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2012 should also bring the likes of newer S-class models, like the upcoming Galaxy Advance. However, what does have the community buzzing at the moment, are the recent “sightings” of what could be considered the Galaxy S III. If or when it’s finally unveiled, it will have rather large shoes to fill and a legacy that could be hard to match.

Apple and Samsung have been going head to head for the last year, over major patent disputes with regards to a variety of products and the rivalry has only escalated with sales figures grossing the 8 digit figures. While Apple still reigns supreme, selling 93 million of their iPhones in 2011, nearly doubling sales from the previous year, Samsung raised smartphone sales, nearly four-fold to 95 million, according to research firm, IHS iSuppli.
