Doom as a franchise has been pretty dormant these last few years. According to Kotaku, Bethesda has confirmed that a new game in the series is being developed. So far named simply Doom 4, the game will be making its way to next-gen consoles.
Sources have told Kotaku that development of the game is not going very well, so the company doesn't have any concrete release dates for the game. The development was apparently rebooted in 2011 because of this.
“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” Bethesda's marketing boss Pete Hines said in a statement. “As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know.”
id is now restarting development of Doom 4
It also seems like Rage hasn't been very good for id. The game didn't meet the sales that were expected, so ZeniMax and id Software have cancelled plans for a sequel to the game and have “downsized” plans for any downloadable content for Rage. All the staff is now said to be working on Doom 4
The previous game in the Doom series, dubbed Doom 3, was re-released last year as Doom 3 BFG Edition. Back in November 2012, id had released the GPL source code for the remake and made it available on the id Software github page.
The Doom 3 BFG Edition was released in October. The set features a re-mastered version of both Doom 3, and its Resurrection of Evil add-on, along with seven new levels titled “The Lost Mission”. The game has enhanced graphics that bring it to the current generation. Along with the add-on, the game has also been optimised in 3D, featuring 5.1 surround sound, achievements on the Xbox 360, trophies on the PlayStation 3, new rendering and lighting and a new checkpoint save system. The controls have also been fine-tuned by id so that the game's fast-paced action translates better into the console versions.
The game features an armour-mounted flashlight, allowing players to have the flashlight on and the weapon ready at the same time. In the original Doom 3 release, players couldn’t keep the flashlight on while holding a gun; you had to pick either. This added to the game’s creepy atmosphere, which unfortunately couldn’t do much by itself to make the game scary.
The Doom 3 BFG Edition also includes the original Doom and Doom II, which were some of the games that defined the first person shooter as a genre in the early days of gaming.
