Reports have been swirling around the Internet that the PlayStation 3 has been jailbroken again via a hack known as JB2 (get it? Jailbreak 2). For those who don’t know, jailbreaking your PS3 is basically a hack that allows users to run downloaded games on your consoles. Yes, it’s illegal.
Will it never end?
This new hack comes via a USB dongle, much like its predecessor and appears to kick in during the console’s prolonged boot up. According to Eurogamer, JB2 basically converts a retail PS3 into a debug unit used by most game developers to install unsigned code. But unlike its older brother that allowed gamers to run downloaded games off their hard drives, this one requires them to burn games to Blu-Ray discs. According to Eurogamer again, this USB dongle has started shipping in Indonesia and is available with a bunch of games like PES 2012, Driver: San Francisco, God of War Collection Volume II and FIFA 12.
Since this hack seems to be based on 3.55 Firmware, this means users who mod their PS3 with JB2 will not be able to take their console online. Of course, none of this has been confirmed or denied by Sony so we’ll keep you posted as and when they release an official statement.
