We finally have our first look at the console version of Diablo III. A trailer for the game shows gameplay on a PlayStation 3 and some notable differences are visible right off the bat. Check out the video:
Most of the differences are on the graphics side of things. The console port seems to be lacking a lot of the visual and particle effects present in the PC version. The game also seems to have some frame rate issues if the action on screen gets too intensive. This could cause some problems if you decide to play local co-op and the fighting gets too frantic.
All the controls for the game will obviously be optimised for controllers. This goes well for the game as you can only have six abilities equipped at any given time. The equipment menu has been revamped as well; the PS3 version sports a radial menu that will be easier to use with an analogue stick.
Eurogamer has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version of Diablo III will not have support for Blizzard’s online service Battle.net. Players will however be able to mix and match local and co-op play.
It was revealed last week that the PS3 and PS4 versions of Diablo III will not have a real-money auction house. The console ports will also not require players to be constantly connected to the Internet to play, as it will have an offline mode with four-player local co-op.
The radial menu is better suited to analogue sticks
“It’s so much fun,” said Lead Designer Joshua Mosqueira when asked about the co-op. “On a big couch, with four of your friends, drinking beers, it’s almost like a party atmosphere. There’s this really awesome social moment with a legendary drop, and everyone is cheering. It feels very collaborative.”
The addition of an offline mode for the PS3 is one of the main reasons for the removal of the real-money auction house. “The ecosystems on the PC and console are very different,” Mosqueira explained. “There were some technical reasons we had to go with offline, but again once you have an offline experience, even if we wanted to bring in the auction house, it just becomes problematic. How do you validate? How do you make sure there is no duping or any of that stuff?”
“But we really felt that playing offline, and being able to move your console from the living room to your bedroom, which a lot of players do to play, is really important,” Mosqueira said.
