Korean electronics giant LG has won a preliminary injunction against Sony’s gaming console, the PlayStation 3, at the Civil Court in Hague. This led to an order to seize every PS3 that will be imported into the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe in the next ten days. According to The Guardian, seizures have already happened in the Netherlands, as tens of thousands of consoles were reportedly held back by customs officials.
LG versus Sony Fight – Round One complete!
We told you about escalating tensions between the two companies a while back and with LG winning the initial patent battle, it has well and truly hit the fan now. LG are, of course, going to move in for the kill and are going to approach the Patents Office for an extension of the injunction period and even the destruction of seized consoles, which would pretty much lead to PlayStation 3s disappearing off European shelves because retailers don’t stock enough consoles for more than a couple of weeks at best.
Sony are allowed to appeal against the decision and probably will, because this could really hurt their prospects, and more importantly their balance sheet. There’s no information on the fate of the Bravia lineup of Televisions yet, which were also mentioned in LG’s initial lawsuit.
