Recently, Virgin Atlantic announced that passengers aboard would be able to make and/or receive calls in mid-air, and the airline became the first British airline to okay such a move. This service is basically targeted at business users, but will be available in all cabins, allowing passengers to make phone calls in mid-air. It is said to be made available on the new aircraft, Airbus A330-300s, too. A poll conducted by Skyscanner, soon followed, which found that majority of people, accounting to about 86 percent strongly disliked voice calls during a flight, since they wouldn’t like to listen to others' conversations, reports The Telegraph. The majority of people said, “It’s annoying to listen to other people’s conversations.”
In the poll conducted, half of the population said that they would use the service, but only to send text messages and about 10 percent revealed that they would use it to send emails. Only about 6 percent of all the passengers said that they would use the service to make and/or receive voice calls. Another poll that was conducted by Telegraph Travel this month said that 30 percent of the readers believe that in-flight mobile phone calls was a good idea.
Voice calls during flight – a strict no-no!
“In a world where we are now almost always ‘on call’, it seems people don’t want to say goodbye to their last sanctuary of non-connectivity. Flying allows us to switch off for a few hours, both from our own calls, and other people’s. However, Virgin’s move is the beginning of the end of the no-phone zone“, said Sam Baldwin, Skyscanner’s travel editor.
Reportedly, the in-flight call/sms service charges are £1 a minute for voice calls and 20 pence for per SMS. The in-flight call service is said to be launched in flights between London and New York. Virgin aims at making the service available on about nine more routes before the year ends. British Airways facilitates in-flight texts, as also web access between London City Airport and New York. However, their service doesn’t support voice calls.
